Pests are always a nuisance, but some pests are destructive as well.
Knowing the difference is what can change your wallet.
Nuisance Pests:
Ants – can be annoying around your home or on your food, but they do not usually cause any serious damage or injury.
Bed bugs – are a nuisance when they bite you while you sleep, however they do not transmit any diseases.
Destructive pests:
Rats – are considered one of the most destructive pests in the world. Rodents chew equipment, machinery and damage major food stocks. They can also transmit diseases such as the hantavirus, leptospirosis, lymphocytic choriomeningitis (LCMV), Tularemia and Salmonella.
Termites – are often referred to as the “silent destroyers”. Subterranean termites are the most dangerous as they feed for 24 hours a day!
Mosquitoes – female mosquitoes feed on blood and therefore are known for their biting. They can transmit serious and fatal illnesses such as Malaria.
Ticks – are a major carrier of sickness. Examples include African Tick-Bite Fever (ATBF) and Rickettsia that can be spread between humans and animals.
When faced with a pest, you need to think about the long term risks.
Pest management is an investment (in destructive pest cases) and so it pays to know the difference!
