Ant Control Myths

Any control myths

When it comes to getting rid of ants, the internet is full of quick fixes — but many of them don’t work. Understanding ant control myths can save you time, money, and frustration. At SMARTSENZ® Integrated Pest Management, we rely on science, not guesswork, to stop ants safely and effectively.

Myth 1: Vinegar kills ants

Vinegar doesn’t kill ants. It only masks the pheromone trails they use to find food. Once the smell fades, ants rebuild the trail and return. So vinegar might be a short-term repellent, and not the ‘one-time’ solution you previously thought.

Myth 2: Boiling water destroys nests

Boiling water will kill the ants near the surface of the nest, but the queen and brood sit deep underground or behind walls. Studies show most of the colony actually survives and quickly rebuilds.

Myth 3: Spraying pesticides keeps ants away

Spraying ant trails may seem effective, but for some ant species it can make infestations worse. Exposure to harsh chemicals stresses colonies and causes colony splitting — when one nest becomes several new ones. So think twice before directly spraying a trail. Rather place bait next to the trail.

Myth 4: Baiting and trail disruption work best

Eco-friendly baits allow foragers to carry the treatment back to the colony, killing ants at the source. Cleaning with citrus-based or mild surfactant cleaners helps remove pheromone trails and prevents re-infestation (and smells better than vinegar in any case).

These findings are supported by university pest management studies worldwide.

Understanding ant control myths helps you choose solutions that last. At SMARTSENZ®, we use integrated, eco-smart methods that manage ants at their source — safely and sustainably.
