When faced with any pest issue, our first response is to find the quickest and cheapest way to sort out the problem. We buy over the counter pesticides without understanding why we have pests in the first place.

Here are a few reasons why DIY pest control does not work:

  1. Treating the cause, and not the symptom

Spraying pests that you see will not get rid of the problem. Firstly, you will be only kill adult pests that have already bred/ laid eggs. Secondly, you are not finding out where the pests are coming from and why they are there. So, more pests will still come!

  1. Harmful pesticides

Most pesticides consist of harmful chemicals and so are dangerous if applied incorrectly or in incorrect quantities. Protective gear is needed to use these chemicals correctly, but because the gear is quite expensive – DIY pest controllers go without/ make their own protective gear. Remember that many pesticides are carcinogenic (cancer causing), so one slip of the wrist today without protection can harm your life permanently.

  1. Education

Pests are always on the move looking for food, water & shelter. When your home is dirty and full of clutter, they have easy access to food and hiding places. Professionals can point this out to you and show you where your problem areas are and what you need to do to fix them. Without a professional’s advice, you many carry on never knowing.

In addition, professionals know when the breeding cycles of pests are. So they can treat the problem at the right time, ensuring effective control of the pests and no future problems of pesticide resistance.
